Reducing Co2 emissions is not just based on a series of isolated initiatives but a well-integrated business strategy looking into the future. In this context, Indonesian oil giant Pertamina organized an innovation drilling technology seminar hosted by Tenaris's professionals, focusing on carbon capture & storage (CCS) in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The two companies recently hosted an innovation drilling technology knowledge exchange focusing on carbon capture & storage (CCS) in Jakarta, Indonesia. The workshop attracted around 270 national oil and gas company participants, connecting both online and in person.
"In this workshop, we aimed to acquire knowledge from Tenaris about choosing the proper material and technology. Currently, we are looking to find the proper materials and surface facilities that will allow us to optimize these CCS and CCUS projects," said Alpius Dwi Guntara, PERTAMINA Hulu Energy's VP of Upstream Innovation.
Guntara acknowledged that PERTAMINA is developing the implementation of CCS and CCUS as one of the company's strategies to reduce carbon emissions in two oil and gas fields (Gundih and Sukowati). "In this workshop, we aimed to acquire knowledge from Tenaris about choosing the proper material and technology. We are currently looking to find the proper materials and surface facilities to optimize these CCS and CCUS projects," Guntara noted.
Under this initiative, Paolo Novelli, Tenaris Energy Transition project director, and Muhammad Hamzah, Tenaris Technical Sales regional senior manager, introduced Tenaris's technical expertise and capabilities and OCTG material selection for CCS wells. Novelli also underlined Tenaris's commitment to decarbonizing, targeting the reduction of carbon emissions by 30% by 2030. "CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and storage) is key to achieving carbon neutrality.
Merry Marteighianti, PERTAMINA's VP for Upstream Research and Technology Innovation, highlighted: "PERTAMINA is exploring the possibilities of forming long-term strategic partnerships related to carbon capture to meet energy transition targets." According to Marteighianti, PERTAMINA is committed to providing energy and developing new and renewable energy to sustain Indonesian energy security and self-sufficiency. As a holding company in the energy sector, it seeks new growth opportunities through investments and business optimization.
Paolo Novelli, Tenaris Energy Transition project director, and Muhammad Hamzah, Tenaris Technical Sales regional senior manager, conducted the session, introducing Tenaris's technical expertise and capabilities, and OCTG material selection for CCS wells, highlighting, among other feats,
TenarisHydril Blue® Dopeless® premium connection in martensitic stainless steel is currently being tested under shallow temperatures at Tenaris's R&D full-scale lab in Argentina, demonstrating its capability to maintain gas sealability even under different low temperatures, thus confirming Tenaris product portfolio is well equipped to take on the latest challenges associated with CCUS injection wells.
"In the current context, most of our customers are not only looking for the most cost-efficient ways of extracting oil, but they are growlingly incorporating the need to reduce CO2 emissions (including its capture and disposal) as part of their business' key industrial strategies," explains Hamzah.
"Stopping CO2 emissions is one part of the challenge that many companies are already working on, but many of them are still falling short on capturing CO2 emissions they release into the air while implementing ways of disposing of them, he explains. "However, one key component of this challenge is finding efficient solutions which do not attempt, cost-wise, against the competitiveness in at times many countries have set rigorous environmental goals to be implemented by 2030."
Under this scenario, Hamzah highlights that not all companies are moving at the same pace as they struggle to find ways to introduce incentives (such as carbon credit or carbon tax) along with technological solutions: "Indonesia is trying to create awareness of these issues while making attempts to incorporate environmentally-friendly processes at a fast speed, which has become even more relevant as Indonesia will be hosting the upcoming G20 summit in November, where climate change will surely be at the top of the agenda."
"Pertamina understands that Tenaris has a profound tested knowledge of green technologies, so we began formalizing the idea of organizing seminars so that Tenaris could share with PERTAMINA's employees the different energy transition projects Tenaris – and the Techint Group – are working in with different customers," underscores Hamzah.
"We are not only exchanging knowledge for future projects, but we are also building awareness that the industry is changing. In turn, Tenaris offers the possibility further to consolidate its position in the country's Oil&Gas sector. We could say these are our mid-term goals."
Novelli also underlined Tenaris's commitment to decarbonizing, targeting the reduction of carbon emissions by 30% by 2030. "CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and storage) is key to achieving carbon neutrality. From this perspective, Tenaris is investing in developing and testing materials and premium connections suitable for the specific challenges of underground CO2 storage," he said.
