The company has implemented a new CO2 emissions data inventory protocol to improve monitoring, reporting and verification to support its ongoing environmental efforts.
Ternium has recently completed a measurement of its greenhouse gas emissions in its entire industry under the Greenhouse Gas Protocol accounting standard. This new measurement included verifying Ternium's greenhouse gas emissions by an independent third party. The application of the GHG Protocol standard complements the current framework of the company's sustainability reporting under worldsteel's CO2 emissions reporting methodology.
The GHG Protocol supplies the world's most widely used greenhouse gas accounting standards which are designed to provide a framework for businesses, governments, and other entities to measure and report their greenhouse gas emissions in ways that support their missions and goals.
In 2016, 92% of Fortune 500 companies responding to the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project, for its acronym in English) used GHG Protocol directly or indirectly through a program based on GHG Protocol. It provides the accounting platform for virtually every corporate GHG reporting program worldwide. The popularity of GHG Protocol standards is due in part to the widespread stakeholder outreach and consultation facilitated by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) during each standard development project.
"For a steel company, having verified the metrics with both methodologies and having supporting documentation according to ISO 14064-1:18 is an important step, aligned with transparency in monitoring our decarbonization strategy," highlights José Fonrouge, Ternium's Global Sustainability Senior Director. "It reinforces the reliability of the process of Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) of GHG emissions," he adds.
The GHG Protocol establishes comprehensive global standardized frameworks to measure and manage greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from private and public sector operations, value chains, and mitigation actions. Building on a 20-year partnership between WRI and WBCSD, GHG Protocol works with governments, industry associations, NGOs, businesses, and other organizations. It also offers training and review services that recognize sector guidance, product rules, and tools in conformance with GHG Protocol standards.
GHG Protocol supplies the world's most widely used greenhouse gas accounting standards. The Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard provides the accounting platform for every corporate GHG reporting program worldwide.
The GHG Protocol is also valued by customers, investors, and the reporting platform specialized in climate matters, for being a methodology that applies to all industries crosswise, allowing greater comparability between industries and other activities.
Ternium's inventory verified under the GHG Protocol comprised four years of operating data (2018-2021) from 25 production units under Ternium's operational control, including steel production, energy generation/sale, delamination, finishing, and mining processes. GHG emissions were reported by the three scopes: direct and indirect from energy consumption and indirect from third parties related to raw materials, including purchasing semi-finished products.
The emission metric per production unit, GHG intensity, supports management and performance indicators for each line to seek maximum efficiency in each process and help in the ongoing decarbonization.
